Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, citing her recovery from a severe hip injury.

A spokesman for Pelosi confirmed her absence but provided no further details about her decision. The ceremony, scheduled for Monday, will include many high-profile attendees but will also see several notable absences from the Democratic Party.

Pelosi, 84, underwent hip replacement surgery in December after fracturing her hip during a congressional trip to Luxembourg. The trip was part of a bipartisan delegation commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Despite her long history of attending presidential inaugurations—11 in total, beginning with John F. Kennedy’s in 1961—Pelosi’s injury will keep her from participating in Trump’s second swearing-in ceremony.

Her absence, however, has sparked speculation beyond health reasons. Other Democratic lawmakers are also expected to skip the inauguration, according to reports from Politico. This aligns with broader tensions surrounding Trump’s presidency and the resistance from some members of the Democratic Party to his policies and leadership style. Pelosi had attended Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, which adds an element of intrigue to her decision not to participate this time.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will also be absent from the ceremony, although her husband, former President Barack Obama, will attend alongside former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton with their wives. The high-profile event will feature a mix of political leaders and prominent tech executives, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, showcasing the intersection of politics and business at such gatherings.
