In the early hours of Wednesday morning, tragedy struck New Orleans’ historic French Quarter as a terrorist attack claimed the lives of 15 people and injured 35 others. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, carried out the attack using a rented Ford pickup truck. After plowing into a crowded street, Jabbar exited the vehicle and fired upon law enforcement officers before being fatally shot by police.

Investigators revealed that an ISIS flag was found in Jabbar’s vehicle, along with weapons and a potential improvised explosive device (IED). Additional potential IEDs were located in the French Quarter, with federal and local authorities working together to neutralize the devices and ensure public safety.
“Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle,” the FBI said in a statement. “Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI’s Special Agent Bomb Technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable.” Authorities are now examining Jabbar’s possible ties to ISIS and other extremist networks.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from President-elect Donald Trump, who labeled the act “pure evil.” In a statement, Trump pledged full federal support to New Orleans as it recovers from the atrocity. “Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department,” he stated, while reaffirming his commitment to prioritizing national security.
