In a recent appearance on “Hannity,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich expressed concerns over President Biden’s declining support among Black voters, suggesting that former President Trump could achieve unprecedented levels of backing in the upcoming election. Gingrich pointed to several factors contributing to this shift, including economic pressures and concerns over immigration and public safety.
Gingrich emphasized that Black Americans are acutely aware of the rising grocery store prices and the influx of illegal immigrants affecting their neighborhoods, attributing these issues to Biden’s policies. He argued that despite significant investments in education, the outcomes remain unsatisfactory, which further erodes confidence in Democratic leadership. Gingrich noted, “They’re looking at grocery store prices they can’t afford, and they know it’s Biden’s fault. They’re looking at millions of illegal immigrants coming into their neighborhoods, taking their jobs, threatening their families with violence, and they know Biden is responsible.”
Poll data underscores this trend, with CNN data reporter Harry Enten highlighting a dramatic drop in support for Biden among Black voters. An aggregate of network polls revealed that Biden’s approval among Black voters has plummeted from 86% in 2020 to 70% in 2024. Conversely, Trump’s support has surged from 7% to 21% over the same period. Enten remarked, “I keep looking for signs that this is going to go back to normal and I don’t see it yet in the polling.”
The data further reveals that while Biden has experienced a slight decline among Black voters over 50, his support among those under 50 has seen a precipitous drop. Enten observed, “Support for the current president from Black voters under the age of 50 has cratered, plummeting from 80 points in 2020 to just 37 points in 2024.”
Recent polls in key states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania reflect similar trends. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll showed a significant decrease in Biden’s support among Black voters in both states. In Michigan, Trump now holds 15% of the Black vote, compared to Biden’s 54%, a stark contrast to the 2020 election results. In Pennsylvania, Trump’s support among Black voters increased to 11%, while Biden’s support stands at 56%.
Gingrich predicts that this shift could lead to a historic performance for Trump among Black voters, potentially surpassing previous Republican records. He stated, “I think he will get a higher vote than any Republican since Eisenhower and may, in fact, exceed Eisenhower, because the momentum for the next four months, I think, is all going to be in… Trump’s favor.”
