Overview
Governor Tim Walz faced criticism following his recent CNN interview, where he attempted to clarify past misstatements about his military service. Walz, who joined Vice President Kamala Harris for the interview, cited poor grammar and emotional intensity as reasons for his previous claims, sparking a wave of skepticism and backlash.
Why It Matters
Walz’s explanation raises concerns about integrity and accountability, especially when it comes to accurately representing military service—a critical issue for many Americans who value honesty and respect for those in uniform.
Who It Impacts
This impacts voters who prioritize trustworthiness in their leaders, particularly those with strong connections to the military and a focus on maintaining the honor of service members.
In a recent CNN interview, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz attempted to address the controversy surrounding his past comments about his military service, which have drawn significant scrutiny. Walz, who has previously claimed to have “carried weapons of war in war,” despite never serving in a combat zone, was questioned about these statements during the interview. His response has only fueled further criticism and skepticism.
The interview, which was pre-taped and conducted by CNN’s Dana Bash, featured Walz alongside Vice President Kamala Harris in her first official interview since becoming the Democratic Party’s de facto nominee. Bash pressed Walz on his previous statements, asking him directly whether he had misspoken when he implied combat experience. Walz responded by reaffirming his pride in his 24 years of service in the Army National Guard but attributed the discrepancy to his manner of speaking and emotional intensity.
Tim Walz asked about lying and claiming he carried weapons in war said, “My grammar’s not always correct.” Holy crap. He’s a moron. He’s had a month to come up with a response and this is it?! pic.twitter.com/wAgPJx470o

“My grammar’s not always correct,” Walz said, attempting to explain his previous comments. He suggested that his passion for preventing school shootings and his candid speaking style might have contributed to the confusion. “I speak candidly, I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I speak especially passionately about our children being shot in schools and around guns,” he added, defending his character and emphasizing his long public service record.
Bash continued to press the issue, asking if Walz had misspoken as his campaign had previously suggested. Walz conceded that his wording may have been incorrect but refrained from admitting any intentional deceit. He instead pointed to the emotional context of his statements, particularly following a school shooting, and even mentioned his wife, an English teacher, as someone who had noted his grammatical errors. Despite his efforts to clarify, Walz’s explanation was met with skepticism by many who questioned his accountability.
Tim Walz just said (falsely) that he would never “demean another member’s service and I never have.”

Critics quickly pointed out that this was not the first time Walz had been criticized for his comments about the military. During the riots following George Floyd’s death, Walz referred to National Guard troops as “19-year-old cooks” who were not adequately prepared to handle the civil unrest. This remark, combined with his recent defense of his military service claims, has led to a growing perception that Walz is not fully honest about his record.
The controversy surrounding Walz’s statements highlights a broader issue of trust and credibility in political leaders. For many Americans, especially those with military connections, accurately representing one’s service is a matter of honor and respect. Walz’s attempt to explain away his past misstatements has done little to quell concerns and has instead amplified doubts about his integrity.
