Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo called it quits on Friday. After weeks of criticism over his handling of the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School that killed two teachers and 19 students, Arrendondo resigned from the Uvalde City Council roughly a month after being sworn in.
The Uvalde Leader-News first announced his resignation.
“After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3. The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde,” Arredondo said.
Arredondo was elected to Uvalde’s District 3 on May 7 and sworn in on May 31 in a closed-door ceremony one week after the school massacre.
On June 21, the city council unanimously denied Arredondo a leave of absence from appearing at public meetings, deeming he must face his constituents. Relatives of shooting victims urged the council to fire Arredondo.
The school district placed him on administrative leave from his school district position on June 22. However, it remains unclear if resignation from the school district is imminent.
