CNN anchor Don Lemon found himself in the middle of controversy after asking a question about the British Royals paying reparations for their role in the slave trade.

The exchange, which has been circulating around Twitter, shows an exchange between Lemon and royal commentator Hilary Fordwich. Lemon asked, “All of this wealth — and you hear about it comes as England is facing rising cost of living … and then you have those who are asking for reparations for colonialism … some of those people want to be paid back.  Members of the public are asking ‘why are we suffering when you have all of this vast wealth?’ Those are legitimate concerns.”

Fordwich responded by highlighting how, if reparations are to be made, the effort would need to be focused on those in Africa who had captured and sold fellow Africans to the Europeans.

Fordwich also said, “I think you’re totally right, if reparations need to be paid, we need to go right back to the beginning of that supply chain and say, ‘who was rounding up their own people and having them handcuffed in cages.’ Absolutely.”
