On Wednesday, a bill focused on making schools safer was blocked by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

The move comes after a deadly school shooting left 19 children dead in Texas.

The bill titled the “Luke and Alex School safety Act” sought to create a “Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices.” This would serve as a tool to be used by schools, law enforcement agencies, and healthcare professionals.

The bill would also have DHS, “collect clearinghouse data analytics, user feedback on the implementation of best practices and recommendations identified by the clearinghouse, and any evaluations conducted on these best practices and recommendations.”

Schumer blocked the bill, claiming the bill’s passage could result in  “more guns in schools.” He then said, “I blocked it.”

Republicans were quick to say Schumer’s action was not motivated by a want to protect schoolchildren, but to use the tragedy to force more gun control regulations on Americans.
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) said, “Not surprising that the Democrat leader would lie about the bill he blocked that parents of Parkland victims have been trying to pass for years. Dems aren’t looking for solutions, they want wedge issues that they hope will keep them in power. Sick.”

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) also sent out a scathing tweet.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said “The truth: Schumer blocked a bipartisan bill the makes the school safety clearinghouse schoolsafety.gov permanent because radical left wing activists oppose it.”
