Reports Emerge – Facebook Quietly Building “Election Commission”

Just in time for the midterm elections, Facebook, according to the New York Times, is quietly building an “election commission,” whose will monitor social activity and sensor election “misinformation.”

The “commission” is similar to the “Oversite Board,” in that it will handle election-related comments and posts, ads and reporting that, to Facebook, seem untrue.

While Facebook has not publically commented on the formation of the “election commission,”  some are speculating that this will relieve Facebook of the pressure to moderate and censor posts, pushing the responsibility of silencing voices to a different so-called “independent” group.

The New York Times also said that the commission will not limit its scope to just the US. It intends to be global, putting Facebook front and center in world politics.
