In light of Tuesday’s vote for House Speaker stalemate, Donald Trump chimed in to encourage Republicans to elect Kevin McCarthy.

During a House vote yesterday, McCarthy was unable to reach the 218 votes needed for him to get the gavel. There were 18 Republicans standing against McCarthy, with many of them supporting McCarthy’s challenger Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). The Democrats supported Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

Trump voiced his support for McCarthy in a post he made on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our great Republican House Members to vote for Kevin, close the deal, take the victory, & watch crazy Nancy Pelosi fly back home to a very broken California, the only speaker in U.S. History to have lost the ‘House’ twice!” T

Trump went on to caution against continuing the infighting saying, “Republicans, do not turn a great triumph into a giant & embarrassing defeat. It’s time to celebrate, you deserve it. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a great job – just watch!”

Trump’s encouragement follows the Republicans winning back the House by a very thing margin.

Republicans opposed to McCarthy’s bid to become House Speaker voiced their concerns, pointing to issues such as federal debt spending, term limits and the ability for House members to call for a vote to replace the Speaker.
