Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden Feel ‘Used’ After the Passage of the COVID-19 Relief Bill

The Anti-abortion group, Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden, sent an open letter to Biden saying they “feel used and betrayed” because of the exclusion of the Hyde Amendment in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill.

“We are very disappointed about the COVID-19 relief package’s exclusion of the Hyde Amendment, a longstanding bipartisan policy that prevents taxpayer funding for abortion.”

The Hyde Amendment was put in place in 1980 and prohibited the use of federal funds for abortions, except for life-saving situations or pregnancy as a result of rape or incest.

“We’re even more upset that the Biden administration is supporting this bill. As pro-life leaders in the evangelical community, we publicly supported President Biden’s candidacy with the understanding that there would be engagement [with] us on the issue of abortion and particularly the Hyde Amendment.”

The Evangelicals for Biden say that the Biden team approached them looking to gain their support, which was offered on the condition that there “would be active dialogue and common ground solutions on the issue of abortion.”

“There has been no dialogue since the campaign,” the open letter said.
